iPad vCloud App - how to expose RDP?
Guys can you share some documentation on how exactly a VM within a NAT/Routed vApp can be accessed via RDP / VNC / etc.? Is there any support from the Console Proxy functionality of vCD or does the cloud admin have to open ports on the external firewall in to the cloud?
Unexpected end of file error
I downloaded the beta yesterday (mostly because 1.0 wasn't working for me anymore). I put the nodes in all my sites and I tried to do a copy of a powered off VM to the site with my vCloud Connector Server. It gets to about 1% and then I get an error that says Error in copy during upload. Error Message: java.io.IOException: Unexpected end of file from server.
Any suggestions? I'm on vSphere 4.1. Thanks in advance!
The query about the vCloud Director.
Is there a way to get to the BIOS when booting a VM in vCloud? I need to be able to change the boot device order and with the virtual console there's no way - by the time the console opens the boot sequence is past that point. Please advise. Regards, Pravin

Any way to fake a public cloud?
Does anyone know if its possible to make an internal private vCloud "LOOK" like a public cloud in the vCC? I would like to set it up and test what it will take for us to connect publicly. Is there any public free clouds for this type of testing?
Thanks!
vCloud Connector 2.0?!
http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vcloudconnector/overview.html
Where is it? The download link on this page takes me to vCC 1.5 instead of the 2.0 download? Am I missing something? ETA on the actual release date of vCC 2.0? Can't find much news in the media other than a blog post saying "End of 2012"
Thanks for the help in advance.
vCloud Connector 2.0!
The Cloud team at VMware and I are proud to announce that VMware vCloud Connector 2.0 has been released to the public!
You can read our announcements here and here!
You can learn all about vCC 2.0 here [vmware.com/go/vcc]
You can acces the download directly from here [vmware.com/go/downloadvcc]
We also have updated vcloud.vmware.com with lots of helpful links and information about vCC 2.0, and there you can also learn about the vCloud Service Evaluation, and Public Cloud Service Providers
We welcome your feedback with this milestone release, as we stive to take hybrid cloud to the next level!
Mixed OS vApps
Does anyone know how to create a vApp that has, for example, a Mac and a PC in it without hosting both VMs on Mac hardware? I am looking for a way to make all Mac VMs run on Mac hardware and all other OS VMs run on non-Mac hardware. This by itself is easy, but how can it be done when both VMs are in the same vApp? The current solution I am researching is using two different storage profiles, where each profile will hopefully force the VMs using it onto that type of hardware.
Usability of vCloud Connector for public/hybrid cloud providers
We have been evaluating vCloud Connector 2.0 for a couple of days now. And we did use the previous versions, too. We are offering public/hybrid cloud services and need a solution to migrate existing workloads from our customers vCenter servers. For us there are some issues with vCloud Connector which prevent a reasonable use.At least that is the result of our tests - maybe we are totally wrong with our assumptions.
1. Concept of moving workloads from vSphere to catalogs
While it surely makes sense to have a possibility to move existent vSphere templates to vCloud catalogs - because that is the place where they belong - i don't understand why workloads are moved like that, too.
If i want to move - or migrate - an existing workload, like a file-server, mailserver, etc. from vSphere to vCloud Director, i want that it is available directly & unchanged as vm/vapp. That is what migration means.
But instead i have it as a template in a catalog. If fast provisioning is enabled, deploying is fast, if not it takes some more time. In most of the cases there is no need to keep the template as soon as the workload is running, so it has to be deleted manually. And even i head nothing bad about linked clones so far, i just don't think that there is a need for unnecessary chaining of vms.
With vCloud Connector 2.0 it is possible to deploy the workload immediately and delete the template right away. Besides the fact that vapps is configured in fenced mode there is another - more important - catch. In our tests,a vm which was automatically deployed was configured with an IP-Adress from the pool and guest customization was activated (e.g. password reset). So instead of having an identical workload, i have something different.
2. In-Effective transport of workload data
Consider the following the scenario (which is quite common for us). Organizational network is an external network which is connected directly (bridged) to the customer's network with bandwidth up to 1 Gigabit/s. So the customer can run all his application in our cloud, while access them from there office without a difference in network performance. Access to the vCloud Director (GUI / API) is public = Internet. Internet access has a bandwidth of e.g. 20 MBit/s
So the customer deploys a vCC-Server, a vCC-Node in vSphere and a vCC-Node in vCloud Director. Since it is a direct connection, all systems are within one subnet, or at least connected without NAT and with wire-speed. When performing a workload copy, the following happens
1. Export OVF to vCC Node vCenter
2. Copy OVF to vCC Node vCloud with high speed
3. vCC Node vCloud starts import in vCloud director and transfers data over vCloud API (Internet).
That means, all the data that has been sent from one node to the other, is sent "back" over the network, out of the companies "slow" internet access, and back to vCloud Director. Consider that our customers have vm's that as big as 500-700 GB. That takes ages.
Right now we are thinking to develop a solution that exports the vm as ova/ovf and sends them to a "service-vm" in our cloud. From this service-vm the ova is deployed to resource vCenter, and then imported to vCloud Director. We only have to think about a way to connect the service-vm to both the customer's network and the resource vCenter in a secure way. Exporting/Importing could be done with ovftool and partly automated with vCenter Orchestrator.
Preventing unsecured templates in catalog
Hello,
I would like to get your valued advice on the topic.
How to prevet keep under control the "security" of vApp templates and media files pubished in organisation catalogs?
In principle consumers can create vApps within their Org vDC using either templates available in the catalog or using media files, for instance ISO files.
How can I prevent consumers from deploying OS/applications that if compromised might harm the security of the whole organisation.
Of course I am working hard to get control at security perimeter level (IDS, IPS, security audit tools etc) but I would like to know your experience / best practices on the management of the Org vDC catalog.
Many thanks
Andrea
Open source vs OVA
Hi All
What is diffrence open source products and Ova products? for example vcloud director and vcenter operation manager ?
Can I use vCloud Connector Basic to copy vSphere template between datacenters?
A client has 4 datacenters around the world. They use one a couple of vCenter servers in Linked Mode. vSphere/vCenter only, no vCloud.
If they create a VM template at HQ, could they use vCloud Connector Basic to copy the template between DC in different locations?
If so, would this offer anything more than cloning the template to another DC using vCenter?
Thanks,

vCloud Connector 2.0 automation?
Hi,
I am looking for a way to automate vCloud Connector 2.0 but have not been able to find any information in this regard.
I would appreciate if anyone can let if know if it is possible to automate vCloud connector by any means (API / CLi etc)
Thanks,

vCloud Connector - vCD system org
Hello.
I tried to register a vCC Node using "system" as an organization and a system administrator account on vCloud Director.
Registration worked and I can see all my organizations in the vCC UI. However, vApp, templates and VMs are not showing up. Is it a bug or using system org is not supported?
I find annoying to create a local account in every organization and register them one by one, I was hopping it could solve my problem.
Thanks,
Alex.
Problem with vCloud Director- Forgot pass Database
Hi everyone, I have some problem with vCloud director database. I forgot password of my vCloud database. How i can find it in config file? Thanks alots. It very serious. Thanks for help me.
vCloud Specifications
Apologies if this has already been asked/covered within the forums. I am in the process of planning to build a vCloud Solution, what are the minimum Virtual Machines that are required. I am thinking along the lines of:
- vCenter Server (Update Manager will be installed on this and have its own separate dbase)
- Domain Controller
- SQL Server
- vShield Manager Server
- vCloud Director Server
Anything else? Not bothered about Orchestrator or Chargeback.
Thanks
Best way to migrate vApp from one vCloud director to another vCloud director
Hi All,
I have to migrate vApp's hosting 5 to 11 vm's in each of them from one vCloud Director to another and wanted to know the best possible methods to migrate it with very less impact on the vm's and downtime.
Migrating vapps
Hi,
Can Connector be used to migrate a vapp from 1 OrgVDC to another within the same vCloud Director instance?
Thanks
