64 bit guest on nested ESXi 5 not supported

$

0

I get a error about "Longmode is unsupported" when trying to install windows 2012 server on a guest vm on a nested ESXi 5 instance.

I've tried all the proposed resolutions I could find on the forums.  Does anybody know how to fix this?

On the physical and nested ESXi instances I have confirmed vhv.allow TRUE config,

~ # cat /etc/vmware/config

libdir = "/usr/lib/vmware"

authd.proxy.vim = "vmware-hostd:hostd-vmdb"

authd.proxy.nfc = "vmware-hostd:ha-nfc"

authd.proxy.nfcssl = "vmware-hostd:ha-nfcssl"

authd.proxy.vpxa-nfcssl = "vmware-vpxa:vpxa-nfcssl"

authd.proxy.vpxa-nfc = "vmware-vpxa:vpxa-nfc"

authd.fullpath = "/sbin/authd"

authd.soapServer = "TRUE"

vmauthd.server.alwaysProxy = "TRUE"

vhv.allow = "TRUE"

but HV is still showing not VT capable?

~ # esxcfg-info | grep "HV"

         |----HV Support............................................0

         |----HV Replay Capable.....................................false

         \==+HV Replay Disabled Reasons :

            |----World Command Line.................................grep HV

I booted into the nested ESXi bios which is a PhoenixBios but there is no option for VT setting

In the vCenter GUI I checked "on" the following box,

CPU/MMU Virtualization

Use Intel VT-x/AMD-v for instruction set virtualization and INtel EPT/AMD RVI for MMU  virtualization

CPUID Mask

Expose the NX/XD flag to guest

I also upgraded virtual hardware and the vm says vmx-09

Saved and Rebooted everything

How do I get the 64 bit guest on the nested ESXi to work?

The physical server is a Dell PE310 with Intel Xeon CPUs and I did enable VT in the bios which seemed to work correctly because I installed ESXi on it, plus nested ESXi.

Hi,

I am giving a try to run 32-bit Windows VMs in VMware Player 7.1.2.2780323, running inside 64-bit Windows 8.1 running as Hyper-V VM.

I am using vmx.allowNested = "TRUE" works fine, and can successfully install Windows 7.

owever, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 go through setup process normally and can click regular buttons normally, but in full-screen dialogs like that asking for Product Key r "Use Express Settings" button is clicked but the setup does not continue. Similar occurs with "Do this later" link, but "Privacy statement" does work.

Not sure why, but in some attempts it prompts for product key in a "window" that can click "Skip" button and get to "Get going fast" issue later on, but sometimes get stuck at "full screen" product key prompt.

Ideas?

Nested ESXi 5.1 and iSCSI Shared Storage

$

Folks:

I'm unable to get my nested ESXi servers to see the shared iSCSI storage I've set up for them.  I'm using iSCSI for the ESXi host that holds the ESXi guests, so I have a successful iSCSI configuration to use as my reference.

Here's what I have for the host network config:

iSCSI targets

+ IP1: 172.16.16.7 (subnet for host IP storage)

+ IP2: 172.16.17.7 (subnet for guest IP storage)

vSwitch associated with vmnic2 on the IP storage NIC

+ Port group "IP Storage" containing the two ESXi guests' virtual NICs

+ VMkernel Port for the host's iSCSI connections: 172.16.16.28

Here's what I have for the guest network config:

+ Virtual NIC on above "IP Storage" port group

+ vSwitch with only a VMkernel port for the guest's iSCSI connections: 172.16.17.38

From the iSCSI host I am able to ping 172.16.16.28.  I am unable to ping 172.16.17.38, however, and here's the really confusing part-- I am able to get an ARP reply from that NIC with the correct MAC associated with the VMkernel port!  This eliminates all kinds of potential misconfigurations (e.g. using the wrong NIC, wrong IP, etc.)

The firewall on the guest shows the Software iSCSI Client port 3260 outbound is open.  Packet captures from the iSCSI target host reveal NO TRAFFIC from the guest's VMkernel IP when refreshing storage adapters.

What else should I look at?  The config of the guest vs. the actual host seems identical yet one works and one doesn't...

Run ESXi cluster in KVM clouster

Hello,

i just think about idea to run ESX hosts in KVM hipervisors, as a VM.
I like libvirt & qemu facilities like balanc-alb, many storage backend support, ksm & etc.
Its allow us, to show one socket with many cores instead of several sockets to ESX.

It's allow to use Libvirt power with VMware vSphere Software frontend.

I know what it's a not standart usecase of ESXi.

May be someone already try this stack and can share experiences?

Pitfalls? Unexpected behaviour?

What community think about it?

or its a crazy idea, why?

iSCSI inside nested ESXi 5.5 guest running on 5.5 host

Hi,

I'm trying to get some good iSCSI performance between my two nested ESXi VMs and my physical HP Microserver Gen8 running Windows Server 2012 R2.

Here's the current setup:

  • 1 x Dell PowerEdge T710 ESXi host
  • 1 x HP Microserver Gen8 (offering up iSCSI)
  • Dell and HP hosts have 2 x Emulex OCe10102 10GbE card
  • All 10GbE NICs are connected using a Force10 cable (basically a cross-over cable) as there are only two physical hosts
  • 2 x nested ESXi VMs with eight NICs (2 x management, 2 x iSCSI, 1 x NFS, 3 x nested guest VM traffic)
  • Promiscuous mode and forged transmits enabled on each port group that offers traffic to nested guests
  • ESXi Mac Learning dvFilter VMware fling installed on host
  • 2 advanced options per vNIC, per nested ESXi for the Mac Learning dvFilter
  • Chap is disabled
  • Host has a vSwitch with both 10GbE adapters assigned as active, with two port groups
  • Port group Nested_iSCSI1 has one 10GbE adapter active, the other unused
  • Port group Nested_iSCSI2 has the other 10GbE adapter set to active, the other unused
  • All ESXi hosts and guests are running 5.5 U2 build 2718055
  • All ESXi nested guests are hardware version 10 and were created using the Web Client
  • HP storage box is running Windows Server 2012 R2

The nested VMs can see the iSCSI LUNs, create/browse datastores etc without issue.  It's just the performance is terrible.  For example:

  • Copy a 4.2GB ISO from a nested ESXi guest to VMFS-formatted iSCSI LUN - 43 minutes (screenshot attached)
  • Copy a 4.2GB ISO from a Windows Server 2016 Technical Preview 3 guest to NTFS-formatted LUN - 8 seconds (screenshot also attached)

Even allowing for some differences between VMFS and NTFS... that's a heck of a difference!

Here's what I've tried:

  • Changing the nested VMs NICs from E1000 and E1000E, then again to VMXNET3.
  • vSwitches and dvSwitches for the iSCSI NICs on the guests
  • Setting the MTU to both 1500 and 9000 (currently it's back at 1500)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,

Hi all,

I have a Dell laptop where on VMlpayer, I have created a VM and installed ESXi5.1.

On ESXi, i have created a VM and uploaded Ubunto OS.

When i try to power on the Ubuntu VM, i get the below error:

Running VMware ESX in a virtual machine requires the outer virtual machine to be configured for running a VMware ESX guest operating system. You cannot power on a virtual machine until the outer virtual machine is reconfigured.

Attached the error I am seeing.

Anybody has any idea what i need to do here?

Many Thanks

Having networking issues with ESXi/vSphere Client

First off, I apologize if this is thread is in the wrong section.

I just recently installed ESXi v6.0.0 within VMware Workstation 12.0 to try to familiarize myself with ESXi as I recently graduated and I have forgotten most of what I have learned from the class I took.

So, ESXi installed without a hitch and was very painless.

Then, I tried to create a VM. This is when things got messy. I can't seem to figure out why, but I get no network connectivity after obtaining a DHCP address at all within the VM, besides being able to ping the ESXi host itself.

First off, network layout is like so:

10.10.10.1     Gateway/Router

10.10.10.254 DHCP, DNS, File Server, VMware Workstation 12

10.10.10.250 ESXi host

10.10.10.244 ESXi Guest - Windows 7

8.8.8.8 Googles DNS

VMware workstation 12:

FX-8350 AMD

Intel Corporation 82574L Gigabit Network Connection

NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 520] (rev a1) - Though, not enabled to work with VMware because either VMware or xvnc is throwing a fit about it

ESXi Host

Images: 2015-10-04_21-13-57.png, 2015-10-04_21-14-34.png

The vSwitch has the following properties:

Image: 2015-10-04_21-19-38.png

And then the following occurs on the ESXi guest:

Images: ,2015-10-04_21-01-58.png, 2015-10-04_21-03-32.png

I really can't figure out what the problem is, or what is going on. Yes, I could set up an internal VM Network with a firewall and what not, but I was hoping that there would already be network connectivity so that I wouldn't have to do that. Also, is it possible to do inline attachments?

Thanks to everyone for their help

Nested Virtualization on Client Hyper-V (Windows Insider Preview Build 10.0.10565)

How To Create Nested Virtualization Using Hyper-V In The Guest?

$

Hi,

I try to do nested virtualization with VMware Player v7 and Windows Server 2012 R2 as the guest but fail to install the Hyper-V role.

According to thisVMware document, it's possible to run a VM within a VM with Player 7: "Virtualized HV is fully supported for virtual hardware version 9 or later VMs on hosts that support Intel VT-x and EPT or AMD-V and RVI. To enable virtualized HV, select VM->Settings and navigate to the processor settings screen. Check the box next to  "Virtualize Intel VT-x/EPT or AMD-V/RVI."“

First, I tried on 2 different computers (1 server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and 1 laptop running Windows 7 Pro) whose CPU support "Intel® VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT)" according to Intel's official website:

Second, in the VM CPU settings, I tried the following options:

hyper-v03.JPG

hyper-v04.JPG

In each case, when I try to add the Hyper-V role in the guest, it fails with the message "Hyper-V cannot be installed: A hypervisor is already running":

hyper-v02.JPG

I also tried using VMware Workstation 11 instead of Player 7 but it's the same.

Can someone tell me what's wrong? How can I do nested virtualization using Hyper-V in the guest?

Thanks in advance.

nested ESXi using NSX: mac learning

I'm thinking to build an environment with some physical hosts 6.0 with NSX 6.2. Inside those hosts i need to nest some vsphere labs.

I see into the NSX > NEW LOGICAL SWITCH gui that I can enable MAC LEARNING for the logical switch so I guess that using the NSX logical switch I can setup a nested environment without using the PROMISCUOUS MODE on my phisical environment.

Any experience or idea ?

How to enable Hyper-V in Windows Server 2016 TP4 VM in VMware Fusion?

I try to get Hyper-V up and running in a Windows Server 2016 TP4 VM running in VMware Fusion 7.1.3.

I tried severval flags (eg. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/22283.how-to-install-hyper-v-on-vmware-workstation-10.aspx ) and "Hyper-V (unsupported)" as well as "Windows Threshold" (windows9srv-64) guestos settings in vmx file, but always Hyper-V logs an error

ID=63, Severity=Error:
Hypervisor launch failed; The hypervisor was unable to initialize successfully (phase 0x2), and was not started.  This initialization failure may be the result of a platform configuration or firmware issue.  Contact your system vendor for more information or updated firmware.

ID=15350, Severity=Error:

The virtualization infrastructure driver (VID) is not running.

Does anybody have a solution for this?

Nested Server 2012 R2 error - "hypervisor is not running"

$

Good afternoon,

I am having some issues starting a virtual machine inside my server 2012 R2 VM. I have search around the internet for a while finding several articles and forums on how to set up nested visualization including the official document on these forums but i am still having trouble.

My setup:

Physical host running - ESXI 5.5 1623387

Physcial machine - dell R720 (2x e5-2690 - supports VT-X and EPT and it is turned on in the BIOS, esxcfg confirms with "3")

VM - Server 2012 R2, fresh install, VM version 9 (vmx-09 created by web console)

I have added / tried every config option that i have found:

- I created the VM through the web console and checked "expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS"

- I ensured that vhv.enable = "TRUE" in the vmx config

- I have tried adding hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE" to the vmx config

- I have tried adding vhv.allow in addition to vhv.enable in the /etc/vmware/config but neither made a difference (found out it wasn't needed later on through a post on this forum)

- I have tried setting the guestOS name to "winhyperv" in the .vmx file

- I have tried setting the guestOS type to "ESXi 5.x" in the thick client

- I have set the cpu/mmu virtualiztion tick to the last one

- I have tried setting the level 1 ecx values as seen here

- I have ensured that monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

- I have uninstalled the hyper-v role and reinstalled it after making these changes to no avail

- I have tried another ESXi 5.5 1331820 host with these setting and it doesn't work (VT-X confirmed as well)

- I have tried server 2016 instead of 2012 R2  and it doesn't work

I think that is about all the things i have tried. I'm sure i have probably missed something very obvious but any help would be appreciated.

This specific virtual machine has not generated a vmware.log file but another one of my test vms ( with the same exact issues on the second physical host) has generated a couple and i am attaching one of them and more can be supplied if needed.

Thanks!

VMware Server 2.0 inside a guest VM running on ESXi 5.5

$

I have a client who is currently running a physical server (Windows Server 2008R2) which I will call ServerA, and is running VMware Server 2.0 to run a small Windows Server 2003 VM within the physical server, which I will call ServerB.  The application software running on this 2003 server (ServerB) cannot yet be upgraded to a newer OS, or so I'm being told.  The client is wondering if he could move ServerA away from a physical server and onto a guest VM in an ESXi 5.5 cluster.  So the idea would be to have ServerA become a 2008R2 VM (since I do not believe VMware Server 2.0 will install on a 2012 OS), and then have VMware Server 2.0 running on the new guest VM ServerA.  The VMware Server 2.0 virtualization would then have the 2003 ServerB guest running.

Logically it would be something like this:  ESXi 5.5 host cluster -> VM guest running on ESXi cluster with guest OS 2008R2 -> VMware Server 2.0 installed on guest OS 2008R2-> VM guest running on VMware Server 2.0 with guest OS 2003

Will this work?
