Running a 32-bit application within a virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 x64

Hello, I am starting to go cross-eyed looking for a solution to my problem.

----------- The following is backgroundinformation as to WHY I am asking the question below ------------------------

I got an old application that the business depends on. It previously ran on an old physical server, but when it crashed and was unable to be restored I managed to move the application over to a new virtual 2008 R2 x64 server. From there other users with 32-bit systems can install and run the application, but it is not per se installed on the server since I only get the message about needing a x64 version (which doesn't exist and any support for the app is long gone). Several documents and applications link to the SQL database belonging to the application

The issue now is that an error is occuring with the application where it keeps users logged into it, but doesn't show them on the logged in the user list when I access the client version on my computer. As I deleted the users and recreated them with new names it just kept stacking them instead of replacing them and now our maximum number of licensed users has been reached resulting in only 4 online users at the same time :/

I want access to the application server-side to see if I can work things out on that end, but since I can install the client on the server I'm not sure how best to proceed.

---------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is the best way to run 32-bit applications from within a virtual WS 2008 R2 x64?

And I mean installing the application on the server and running it from it as well. What I am after is the same functionality as Windows XP Mode provides in Windows 7.

I've considered a virtual WS 2003 x32 or Windows XP x32 to be nested with it...is that plausible, and if so: how should I proceed?

It is on EXSi 5.0.

Thank you for any pointers given.
